RM Jefferies - Trout and Salmon Flies
Richard M Jefferies had forty-years ‘Game’ experience both as a gunsmith and organiser at Grampian Shooting. During that time Richard had also owned and managed his own game fishing (tackle) shops. With one website built already by p]xe/ loom , Richard decided the time was right to offer his superior quality fly-tye hooks to customers online.
Project Description

p]xe/ loom already had a good working relationship with Richard, having built his first website, troutandsalmohooks.com back in 2008. It was a similar proposition: the customer needed a Google-friendly URL registering, a back-end product database producing and a site that adapted well to mobile and tablet devices. The only significant departure would be in terms of the graphics. To convey the sheer beauty and sheer quality of the products, the product photos would have to be large. The result is work-in-progress, but it’s clear at this early stage that the emphasis has been placed on the product photography supplied by the client.

Initially, I was a little sceptical about the customer supplying their own product photography. Producing images for the web is a challenging experience. Large, high-resolution images can often take minutes to download, and download time increases significantly if you wish to show 10 or more products on any one page. Long, extended download times can often make the user look elsewhere. They can also have a detrimental effect on bandwidth; the bigger the image, the more bandwidth your site will use. This is not so much of a problem if you have one user viewing the site at any one time, but if you plan to have multiple concurrent users, download time will be even slower.

Richard anticipated showing between 20-30 product-images a page. He also wanted the flexibility and convenience of adding the products and product images himself.

At first the images Richard produced were a little too large for online consumption, but with a little tuition the customer was able to provide sharp, attractive photos that were relatively small in terms of file-size and loaded quickly on the website. They were also large enough to show the level of detail needed to sell the product.

The site is supported by a MS SQL Database which ‘holds’ the product data and a browser-based content management system that allows Richard to edit and manage his products on a flexible, routine basis from anywhere in the world.

Work on the website continues.
